1. What are your areas of interest? The Whitecap Foundation currently makes grants in the following program areas:
2. What are your geographic focus areas? Whitecap is interested in funding after-school, weekend and off-track education as well as family support programs that are offered to specific neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Our geographic areas of interest lie from Hollywood in the north to the 10 Freeway in the south, and between Western Avenue and the 605 Freeway. 3. If we have a project that appears to be a good match, whom do I speak with at the foundation? It is not necessary to speak with anyone at this point. If you've reviewed the guidelines and feel your organization is a good match for Whitecap, please make your initial contact through a brief letter of inquiry, electronically or by mail. We have found that this is the most effective way to ensure that your project receives prompt and thorough attention. If, after making an inquiry, you have questions related to the foundation's response, please contact us. For more information, please see Grant Seekers. 4. What should we include in our letter of inquiry? If your organization's mission matches the Whitecap Foundation's mission and focus areas, and you are interested in acquainting the foundation with your programs, please send a 1 - 2 page letter of introduction, electronically or by mail, that includes the following information:
5. Who should I send my letter of inquiry to? All correspondence should be emailed to Laura Campobasso, Executive Director, at the following address: execdirector@Whitecapfdn.org6. Do you have deadlines for submitting letters of inquiry? Letters of inquiry are accepted throughout the year. A proposal is submitted only by request by the foundation. 7. How much time does it take after I've sent my letter of inquiry? If the foundation is interested, the organization will be contacted for a site visit to discuss how the grantee and Whitecap might work together to support the potential grantee's program goals. The organization would then be invited to submit a full proposal for review. If a full proposal has been solicited by staff, the process for review can range from 3 to 6 months. The grantmaking process fosters an interactive working relationship that seeks to support the grantees' mission and goals. 8. Do you have any funding limitations? The Whitecap Foundation makes grants only to qualified tax-exempt charitable organizations. Grants are project-based, year-to-year, and do not cover general operating support. Whitecap does not fund:
Whitecap grants range from approximately $5,000 to $25,000 for after-school, weekend and off-track education as well as family support programs. Award amounts are based on the size of an organization's annual budget, the scope of the project to be funded, and the number of years the organization has been working with Whitecap. 10. If we receive a declination letter, should we submit another letter of inquiry at a later date? If you receive a declination letter, please be assured that Whitecap staff and board have reviewed your letter of inquiry thoroughly and have given serious consideration to the request. Whitecap maintains both electronic and paper files of declined requests, and will contact your organization should our program areas change in the future. If you have any questions regarding your declination, please feel free to contact the Whitecap staff electronically at execdirector@Whitecapfdn.org or by phone. 11. What type of funding support do you provide? Within our program priorities, the Foundation provides funds for such things as program staff salaries, computers and educational software, project materials and supplies. EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT ACADEMY 1. What is the Executive Management Academy? The Whitecap Foundation developed the Executive Management Academy (EMA) to provide leadership training and technical assistance for its grantees. The EMA is a participant-driven program that provides learning and networking opportunities and initiatives. The EMA provides high quality trainings presented in an environment where new ideas can be exchanged and participants have the opportunity to share professional experiences. Through the interaction, participants enhance their own knowledge and skills in order to lead their organizations more effectively. Follow-up by the foundation facilitates the transfer of learning into the organization. 2. I am not a Whitecap grantee, may I still participate in the Executive Management Academy? In order to be eligible, participants must first be awarded grant funds from the foundation. The Executive Management Academy is designed to provide technical services in support of Whitecap's grantmaking practices. OTHER 1. What if a question is not listed here?
